5 Solo Travel Tips I Live By
Solo travel has been one of the most transformative parts of my journey. At first, the idea of being alone in a new place felt intimidating — Who would I eat with? How would I stay safe? Would people stare at me if I took a selfie?
But with each trip, I’ve learned to reframe those fears. Solo travel has become less about being by myself and more about being fully present. It’s where I’ve found confidence, stillness, and unexpected joy.
Here are five of my favorite tips that have made solo travel not only possible but deeply fulfilling.
🚶🏽♀️ Tip 1: Getting Around Solo
Transportation can be one of the most stressful parts of travel, especially alone. Over time, I’ve built a rhythm that works for me:
I walk as much as possible — with Google Maps guiding me when I need it.
For longer distances, I rely on Uber or Lyft, but always use their safety features like confirmation codes, ride tracking, or requesting a female driver.
Depending on the destination, I’ll also use public transportation. It’s a great way to feel connected to local life, but I only do it when I feel comfortable with the route and timing.
The key: find what makes you feel safe while still open to adventure.
🍴 Tip 2: Dining Solo Without the Awkward
Eating alone used to be one of my biggest fears, but now it’s one of my favorite parts of solo travel.
I’ll sit at the bar, by a window, or near a TV so I can people-watch or have a view.
Sometimes I bring my Kindle or play Duolingo/NYT games while waiting for food.
On Virgin Voyages, I even asked for half-portions so I could taste multiple dishes without over-ordering.
Dining solo has become a ritual of freedom — a way to savor not just the food, but also the experience of being present with myself.
🗺️ Tip 3: Balancing Planning & Spontaneity
When traveling alone, I’ve found it’s helpful to have a mix.
I like to plan one highlight each day, maybe a tour, a museum, or a special dinner. So I always have something to look forward to.
But I also leave space for unplanned moments — wandering into a small café, stumbling across a mural, or joining a street festival I didn’t know about.
That balance keeps me grounded while leaving room for the magic that only happens when you don’t script everything.
🛡️ Tip 4: Staying Safe While Traveling Solo
Safety is always at the top of my mind, not from a place of fear but from a place of wisdom. A few practices I live by:
I share my live location with trusted family and friends.
I’m thoughtful about who I tell I’m traveling solo. Not everyone needs to know in the moment.
I know my limits, especially with alcohol, so I can stay aware.
I make sure I have reliable phone service, whether that’s an international plan or eSIM, so I can stay connected if needed.
I trust my gut. If something doesn’t feel right, I leave.
The goal isn’t to worry constantly — it’s to travel smart so I can enjoy fully.
✨ Tip 5: Building Mindset & Confidence
More than anything, solo travel is about mindset. At first, it felt uncomfortable being alone — but I’ve learned to embrace it.
I started small: taking myself out to lunch or going on a local day trip before flying across the world.
I plan one highlight each day, so I feel excited but not overwhelmed.
I celebrate little wins — navigating transportation smoothly, or even taking photos and selfies without feeling judged.
Solo travel has given me more than just memories of places. It’s given me a sense of confidence that carries into every part of life.
Solo travel isn’t about being alone — it’s about discovering how much you already carry within yourself. These five tips have grounded me, stretched me, and reminded me that joy often lives in the small, simple moments.
Whether you’re dreaming of your first solo trip or planning your next one, I hope these tips remind you that traveling alone doesn’t mean being lonely — it means traveling gracefully, with presence, courage, and curiosity.
